Health Center
School Year 2006-2007

The Teen Health Center at Breed Middle School was established in 1998 through the efforts and support of Lynn Community Health center and Lynn Public School Department.  It is one of 6 school based health centers (SBHC) in the Lynn schools. The other SBHC are located at Classical, Lynn Tech and English High Schools, Marshall Middle School and Ingalls Elementary School.

The Teen Health Center staff consists of a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) behavioral health counselors and an office manager.  The Teen Health Center is open during school hours.    The staff of the Teen Health Center works closely with the school nurse to ensure that the students at Breed are healthy.  The Teen Health Center is located in the same area as the school nurse’s office, directly across the hall from the main office.

The PNP is able to evaluate students for illness, write prescriptions if needed and perform yearly physicals.  Having these services available in school help to ensure that students are able to stay in school and avoid unnecessary dismissals. The PNP also is available to provide health education on an individual basis and through classroom activities.

The behavioral health counselors meet with students who are referred by guidance counselors, teachers and parents for issues relating to difficulty in school, at home or behavior issues that may be effecting their school work.

The staff at the Teen Health Center can assist families in obtaining health insurance, finding a primary care physician/nurse practitioner and getting necessary immunizations for school,

Feel free to stop by and meet the staff.

Health Tips

Welcome back to all !  And a special welcome to all the new Breed students and their families.  Hopefully you will read this section of the Breed web page every now and then to receive some health tips!

Right now everyone is adjusting to being back at school.  The lazy days of summer are over and we all have to be a little more structured in our time and this is sometimes a very big adjustment.  Getting to bed on time and getting up on time can be a little challenging at first.  So you need to establish a bedtime routine which should include some “down time” an hour or so before you go to bed.  This should be quiet reading or music, a warm shower or perhaps a cup of warm milk or decaffeinated tea.  And the key is to try to go to bed at about the same time every night and get up at the same time in the morning.  Even on weekends you should not stray too far from these times or else you will find yourself re-adjusting every Sunday night.

The lazy days of summer also included a brunch approach to eating .  I am sure many of you stayed in bed in the morning late enough so when you got up – you were more in time for lunch then breakfast.  This approach will not work well for school days. Your brain needs some morning fuel.  You may not feel very hungry so early in the morning but a healthy snack on the way to school is better than nothing at all.  (try a banana, a Ziploc bag of dry cereal or a gogurt).

Starting off on the right foot will make for a more productive school year.   And feel free to stop by the health center if you have any questions about your health.
